We made it through our first month! And what an amazing month it has been. I knew I would enjoy being a mommy, but it’s WAY more incredible than I imagined. Yes, life has changed drastically, but I LOVE our new life. Kya is a precious gift from our heavenly Father. The praying and waiting for this baby has made the moments with her all the more sweet. We are head-over-heels for our beautiful baby girl. I especially love watching Daniel love her.
During the first month, we were given so much help! My parents arrived from SC the night before she was born and they stayed for two weeks and they did all the errands, cooking, and cleaning and of course helped take care of Kya. Daniel’s parents live in town and were also very helpful with food and cleaning. Church friends brought meals as well. My sister flew in from Guam and stayed for ten days after my parents left. Kya loved all the attention from her aunt! We could NOT have survived without all the help!!! Thank you, everyone!!!
I finally feel like we’re into our “normal” routine again…as normal as life with a baby can be. I am cooking and cleaning on my own again and that feels great. My postpartum recovery has been better and easier than I expected. In the beginning, I had an unusual amount of energy (probably adrenaline in reality). Though now that I’m doing more, I get more tired, especially in the late afternoon/early evening. Though sleep is definitely interrupted, I have been trying to get a full night’s sleep (even if it takes more hours to get it all in). I have been able to sleep 6-8 hours/night for the most part (not straight through of course). I get up to feed Kya every 3-ish hours at this point. Sometimes if she gets a really good feeding before bed, she’ll go 5 hours at a time. We have a good little sleeper on our hands. She takes after mommy! I was a fantastic sleeper as a baby. Crossing my fingers that this habit continues!
This month hasn’t been without struggles though. My biggest point of anxiety has been Kya’s weight gain, or lack thereof. She just reached her birth weight at four weeks. We have had so many pediatric appointments and weight checks. They have been stressful for this new mama. Feeding has been going well and I know my baby is healthy. She is just a slow gainer and a petite little thing. I’m happy to report that she has upped her game this week and has put on a good amount! At her appointment on Tuesday she was 7 lbs. 6.5 oz. Three days later on Friday she weighed 7 lbs. 12.5 oz!!! A huge gain for just a few days! Mama is happy and relieved.
“This job has been given to me to do. Therefore, it is a gift. Therefore, it is a privilege. Therefore, it is an offering I may make to God. Therefore, it is to be done gladly, if it is done for Him. Here, not somewhere else, I may learn God’s way. In this job, not in some other, God looks for faithfulness.” -Elisabeth Elliot
