DIY Pallet Wood Sign

Today, I FINALLY got around to working on my pallet sign. My husband built me the sign back in the fall out of a pallet that was laying around his brother’s farm. I knew I wanted to use the sign over our bed {we’ve lived in our house for 1.5 years and there was still no artwork over the bed}. I searched the web for a romantic phrase to use and found the perfect one! I was pleasantly surprised to find that same phrase on a beautiful piece of artwork at the Potato Barn in Scottsdale, Arizona {Um, that store is A-MAZ-ING}.

A friend from college contacted me to let me know she has an Etsy store where she sells wreaths, vinyl lettering, and signs. I was impressed by her work and told her I would like a custom stencil to use on my pallet sign {I am definitely not one to free hand}. I sent her the phrase and my font choice {“KG Beneath Your Beautiful”} from Dafont. I then purchased the vinyl stencil on her Etsy shop and waited for it to arrive! Today was the first free afternoon I’ve had in a while to work on a project. I got right to it. Our garage is a little full right now because my husband is building his mom a custom kitchen {will post on that later}, so I opted for our light-filled office as my work space.

It was very easy to attach the vinyl stencil to the pallet. I wiped the pallet down with a wet rag and let it dry before starting. I carefully positioned the stencil on the pallet and used a large craft stick to press the sticky back of the stencil to the board. I then peeled the top layer off, revealing the lettering underneath. I used a sponge brush and white Chalk Paint to do the job. The first coat dried very quickly so I immediately went over it again with a second coat. I peeled off the stencil and that was that! A little bit of the paint bled underneath the stencil, but it lends itself to the “rustic” look of this piece. I can’t wait to hang it above our bed!!
